Stories / Controversy | D'Arcy O'Connor tells in The Secret Treasure of Oak Island that Gilbert Hedden tracked down Vaughan in New York City in 1939 an interviewed him giving the following account: The Vaughans came to Nova Scotia by way of New England from Virginia. They were later followed by the McGinnises and Smiths. After having settled in the vicinity, some time in the 1790s two of the Smiths or McGinnises, or one of each family who were sailors visited the (Smith or McGinnis) family after an extended voyage ending in England. While in England they befriended on old sailor who said he was one of Kidd's crew, and in gratitude for their help and friendliness he told them that Kidd did have a huge cache of valuable booty. He did not know exactly where it was except that it was somewhere in New Anglia and that it was on an island covered with oaks. This information excited the local (Smith or Mcginnis) family knowing of Oak Island and led them to carefully explore the island. |
Daniel McInnis[edit]
Daniel McInnis | |
---|---|
Also Known As: | Daniel McGinnis, Donald MacInnes |
Member of Groups | Treasure Hunters, Land Owners |
Personal Details | Born in 1758/59 on the Isle of Skye, 1773 he emigrated to North Carolina with his parents when he was around 14 years of age |
Stories / Controversy | Since Daniel McInnis is such an important player to the legend, there is an entire page devoted to what we know about him. See Daniel McGinnis.
Virtually every account of Oak Island includes Daniel McInnis as a "boy", there are clear gaps in the geneological records. There was a Daniel McGinnis (Sr?) that would have been 37 at the time, but there is also some evidence that there may have been a Daniel (Jr) born in 1759 which would make him 16 or 17 at the time of discovery. Most accounts also talk of "the boys" rowing a small boat from the mainland, which is also probably not factual since we know from other records that McInnis was living on Oak Island since roughly 1788. |
